16 May 2015 SW OK tornadoes
Ryan Jewell, Bryan Smith, me, and a film crew with ABC News targeted SW OK. We waited near Hollis, OK for about 30 minutes, and then chose a more discrete cell near Paducah, TX as our target. We maneuvered through Elmer, OK on county roads to make a river crossing, and then got well ahead of the storm near Tipton, OK. Tornado potential was expected to increase by 5-6 pm as low-level winds increased, and the storm encountered richer moisture and backed surface flow. We actually went a bit too far E and had to come back W to wait on the tornado to emerge from the murk, missing the "wedge" phase. However, we had a nice view of the cone tornado approaching from the WSW. We later dropped S to intercept two more supercells near the Red River.
